Titanium Aluminide, also known as intermetallic Gamma Titanium Aluminide or γ - TiAl, is an amazing material. It offers strength and high temperature capabilities similar to nickel based alloys, but only about half the weight. It is also amazingly difficult to machine. This material is in a class all by itself. It is brittle, has low thermal conductivity and it is highly abrasive. If the machining is not done to exacting parameters metallurgical surface defects can arise. Additionally, improper machining techniques can lead to chipping and cracking in thin sections and sharp edges and grain pullout.
Fortunately, we have learned to overcome these obstacles.

We at Moeller have been machining Gamma Titanium Aluminide in high volume production since 2007, with several years of development work prior to that. We have more experience machining TiAl than any other source, anywhere in the world. This is based on both piece count and machine hours. We are the prime machining source for the Gamma Titanium Aluminide turbine blades that are helping to make new-generation aircraft engines lighter and more fuel-efficient and cleaner. We have devoted literally thousands of engineering and machine hours to perfecting a variety of techniques for machining Gamma Titanium Aluminide including milling, turning, grinding, drilling, EDM, and polishing.

Quality and Productivity
Our expertise with TiAl is such that we are achieving defect-free yeilds and machining costs comparable with equivalent parts made from 6-4 titanium or stainless steel. This is the result of implementing unique fixturing concepts of our own design along with proven combinations of machining paramaters and tooling.
